About Microsoft Authenticator

1. Either approve the notification sent to the Microsoft Authenticator, or enter the one-time password (OTP) generated by the app.  The one-time passwords (OTP codes) have a 30 second timer counting down.

2. Use Microsoft Authenticator for easy, secure sign-ins for all your online accounts using multi-factor authentication, passwordless, or password autofill.

3. Make Microsoft Authenticator the default autofill provider and start autofilling passwords on apps and sites you visit on your mobile.

4. Sign-in on the Passwords tab inside the Authenticator app with your personal Microsoft account to start syncing passwords, including the passwords saved in Microsoft Edge.

5. This will let your organization know that the sign-in request is coming from a trusted device and help you seamlessly and securely access additional Microsoft apps and services without needing to log into each.

6. If you choose to not grant these optional access permissions, you can still use Microsoft Authenticator for other services that do not require such permission.

7. Because Microsoft Authenticator supports single sign-on, once you have proven your identity once, you will not need to log in again to other Microsoft apps on your device.

8. Sometimes your work or school might ask you to install the Microsoft Authenticator when accessing certain files, emails, or apps.

9. After you’ve signed in with two factor authentication (2FA), you’ll have access to all your Microsoft products and services, such as Outlook, OneDrive, Office, and more.

10. Microsoft Authenticator also supports cert-based authentication by issuing a certificate on your device.

11. You also have additional account management options for your Microsoft personal, work or school accounts.

Microsoft Authenticator Customer Insights

1. You don't even have to create passwords or pins, the app does it, and the passwords are much stronger than mine. It's a little bit of a hassle if you don't have everything linked already or a second email or cell phone number but I believe that's the point a little extra security without all the hidden technology words for those who need to put an " extra tie on the bag " to secure information, memories & doc's.

2. I like apps that are consistent in performance & function; this one always works well.Compared to some other Auth apps, this one offers some of the best, free account functional features! I think the most annoying part of it is the clunky UI.

3. Backup experience could be improved by prompting to restore from a backup when logging into the app for the first time (as in, if you didn't see the tiny text at the bottom to restore from backup and just logged in normally).

4. While setting it up after uninstall, it kept prompting to confirm a 2 digit code that didn't appear on my phone.

5. It's just as easy to use your password.I love this app! It completely simplifies the forgotten passwords and pins problem.

6. (2) On each device, there is often a different code for the same account; accounts may not appear on all devices.

7. But otherwise, it works for basic Auth needs.(1) It seems to work differently on each device.

8. It goes off constantly with an ongoing notification that is highly annoying and disruptive when trying to use my device for work.

9. Easy to navigate, just follow simple directions and click, connect, link, and done ✔️Needs work.

10. There are other things we track passwords for...When it works, it's great.

11. I have *A LOT* of accounts (as a strong infosec proponent) so trying to find a specific one is a hassle.

Steps to Troubleshoot & Fix Microsoft Authenticator Issues

1. Fix Microsoft Authenticator Not Working/Crashes/Errors/Unresponsive & Black/White screen:

  1. Restart Microsoft Authenticator: Restarting the app will resolve most errors.
  2. Update the Microsoft Authenticator App. Here is how:
    1. On Android goto PlayStore » Search for "Microsoft Authenticator" » Open Microsoft Authenticator » click "Update".
    2. On iPhone, goto AppStore » Your profile » Available Updates » Check for Microsoft Authenticator » click "UPDATE".
  3. Clear Microsoft Authenticator app cache: Clearing cached data will force your app to retrieve the latest data directly from Microsoft Authenticator servers.
    1. On Android, goto Settings » Apps » Select "Microsoft Authenticator" » click Storage » click "Clear Cache".
  4. Check Microsoft Authenticator app permissions. If any of these permissions required to use your device's features are disenabled, Microsoft Authenticator might not work.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall Microsoft Authenticator. If nothing else has worked, completely uninstall Microsoft Authenticator then reinstall.
  6. Restart your device. Last, restarting your device can often clear most problems causing Microsoft Authenticator not working

2. Fix Microsoft Authenticator Server issues & Internet Connection

  1. Check network connection: An unstable Internet will make Microsoft Authenticator be unable to connect to it's servers. Ensure your wi-fi is working then restart app.
  2. Disable VPN: VPN can cause connection errors and lead to Microsoft Authenticator not working. Make sure all VPNs are off
  3. Enable background data: When Background data is turned off, Microsoft Authenticator may not be able to connect to the Internet when running in the background.

  • Hi,
I changed phone and as a result, the microsoft authenticator app got removed. Microsoft authenticator is my 2FA for my linkedin account & i set it up via the QR code that was given to me by Linkedin.
Now i can't access my linkedin account. I look forward to hearing from you.

  • I'm currently locked out of my school account (aurbanski758@redacted) as I got a new phone and the microsoft authenticator app did not save my account details. I got logged out on my computer from canvas as it does that every two weeks for safety. I tried to log in on my authenticator app but on the app, it's telling me I need to open the authenticator app to log in. On my computer trying to log in, it's telling me to use the authenticator app but I l cannot log in on the app either. It seems as if i'm in a continuous loop.

  • I lost my phone and cannot get access to the Authenticator app
of my another business account. (josephine@redacted)
I know the password and I have the phone (same number)
but in order to login, it requests me to enter the code from authenticator. Which I already have no access to.

I have reset the password and click all possible links and search all possible forums. Seems there isn't a fix.
It must require the authenticator code and the most ridiculous thing is it's Microsoft recommends me to install this app and then I find out the backup to icloud is not automatically turned on. Now I have no back up to restore. lost access to my old phone and no way to login again.

Microsoft sent me an email saying that the payment link is broken but I cannot login to my account (but I have the access to outlook on my office desktop only)

Please also cc the reply to chriswong.june@redacted as well.

  • I am studying in Amsterdam this semester and I got a new SIM card for my phone. When I tried to log into my Microsoft gmail account it is sending me a code to my old SIM that I don't have access to right now. I placed a request to change the authentication to an email instead of a text but it was denied. I have to complete paperwork for my new job that's due today and I have to sign on to their portal using this email but it wont let me sign on without putting in a code form the authenticator. On the authenticator app it is telling me my security info change is pending and will be replaced after 30 days but I can't log on right now. I don't know how to fix this and get a code so I can sign on to the portal. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Hi I used microsoft authenticator as TOTP app for github, currently have no way of accessing github without a 6 digit code. However, there was a change to the App and it now displays an 8 digit code. I've worked with Microsoft support to get the 6 digit number it had but it did not work and advised to put in a ticket here. I've tried this https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/c04a9e6c-9bd0-43b2-80f9-2399242b3f92/microsoft-authenticator-app-gives-8-digit-code-instead-of-required-6-for-azure?forum=ApplicationInsights#:~:text=You%20should%20have%20setup%20a,provide%20you%208%20digit%20codes.&text=Two%20step%20verification%20provides%206%20digit%20codes

Also modified various security settings without luck, will need my app to show a 6 digit app otherwise all of my github data will be unrecoverable due to this change by Microsoft.

  • Good Evening, For the last few months, I've been using Authenticator with my main Hotmail/Outlook addresses, with Authenticator installed on only one device, my iPhone. At the beginning of the week, my phone had to be reseted due to technical issues not linked to a Microsoft product. I then restored my iPhone to its pre-erase state from an iCloud backup containing Authenticator. The problem is the following: when I open Authenticator, I have a message saying "beginning recovery process". I then see the list of all the emails that were using the app before the reset. I try to log in with my main email address, fabienvadnais@redacted and have the message: "Please validate access in Authenticator". You see the problem here? It's circular. I'm trying to restore authenticator, which is unavailable at the present time, from a backup and the process is asking me to validate the access in Authenticator... I've been trying to solve this Gordian Knot for a week now without any success. In the meantime, I'm unable to access to any of those email addresses ad they all required that I validate the code in Authenticator, which I don't have. PS. I still have access to my emails from devices where I was already logged on. Thank you,

  • Hello There
I hope you are doing well and staying safe.
I need your help on priority on one of the Microsoft accounts (sai.sathiya.sri@redacted). Due to this issue I am not able to continue my pre-joining formalities.
I will give you a background, I have created a Microsoft account from one of the service now application links from the Deloitte onboarding team.
I am going to join Deloitte soon for the pre-onboarding process. There is an account which is created using a personal email id (sai.sathiya.sri@redacted).
While creating this account (from the link provided by Deloitte), I have given my user id as email id (sai.sathiya.sri@redacted) and new password and then I had asked to installed MFA (Microsoft) in my mobile,
I had installed and sync with QR code was showing on the screen, After that I was able to access the Deloitte Servicenow application with MFA codes from my mobile.
After a week due to some reason my MFA got uninstalled when I reinstall I could not recover from icloud account, after that I did reinstall Microsoft MFA but I could not re-sync with Deloitte servicenow applications because
I did not stored the QR code or security key. I had a discussion with the Deloitte IT team but they are not able to fix the issue because the account is created using my personal email id.
The Deloitte IT team is having some limitations to fix the issues which are created using personal email id and they asked me to talk to the Microsoft team.
And, I was trying to update my security details like enabling new MFA and new mobile number details etc., all those are done in Microsoft account but not in deloitte servicenow account.
So whatever I could do in this account is impacting Microsoft accounts only, not Deloitte ServiceNow applications. So I am not sure how to fix it.
You need help me to fix the issue to login with Deloitte ServiceNow applications. I am guessing we can fix this. Either we have to deactivate this account/profile and
I should re-create the account using the same link which was provided by Deloitte. Or you can give me a QR code or security key to re-sync the MFA. And meanwhile today morning
I had a chat with the Microsoft IT team (Case number: 1026042005) who asked me to fill this form since you are able to fix it. So I would request you to please help me to fix this issue as soon as possible.
you can call me at +44 07584361435 or email me at sathiyamsai@redacted or sai.sathiya.sri@redacted. I am happy to help you to fix this issue. Many thanks in advance.  Now I have to reset and activate my MFA should sync with Deloitte Service app.
    Kind Regards

  • Hi outlook team,
I reset my password for uma.tatikonda@redacted with my new iPhone 12 pro max password generator. I accidentally did not update the password on my saved passwords. Now I want to reset my password. When I changed phone from iPhone Xs mas to 12 Promax, my authenticator app is signed out. Due to 2- step authentication turned on, I need my phone number and authenticator app to reset my password.
I requested an outlook to change my security setting to rao.tatikonda@redacted on 22 December 2020. It shows 30 days required for this change. After a month, I am now trying to reset my password; it is still asking the authenticator app or 25 character recovery code. I don’t have any of these. I tried to contact Microsoft team on various occasions; no one had a clue how to help.
Accessing my email is quite important, especially my work office 365 also tied with this account. I would greatly appreciate it if someone helps me to access my email. For any questions, please reach me on my phone +64224135645 or email stated above.
    Thanks a lot, Uma Tatikonda

  • Hi Microsoft,

After a phone factory data reset, and uninstall/reinstall of the MS Authenticator App, I am unable to receive sign-in approval notification requests through the app. I still receive them via the app from some desktop apps (Outlook 365 and OneDrive), but not through browser windows or when trying to add my Outlook account to my mobile Outlook app.

When entered, the six-digit code generated on my authenticator app on my mobile device results in a message "You didn't enter the expected verification code. Please try again" with error code 500121.

Being unable to receive authenticator app requests means I am locked out of my MS admin center, other MS online portals, and other critical areas required for my Microsoft 365 to function. I am stuck in an endless loop of being asked sign-in and not being able to.

Could someone please urgently assist as I am the sole account administrator for this business account.

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,

    Yen
