1. The App, (This App), BAD.I have been with American Express since 1991 and have had very positive experiences until the last app update, which is an absolute abomination!!! The app does not function correctly and the option to "pay other amount" does not work!! After so many complaints by customers I cannot understand why the application issues have not been resolved.

2. Other apps I've used such as Bank of America keep a running total balance next to each transaction, so if you like to pay off your total balance, then you can see what pending charges aren't being included in that payment.

3. If you enter an amount other than Total Balance, the radio button then defaults to Total Balance anyway.

4. Without that transparency, it is incredibly frustrating to pay off total balance and have that balance spike back up when the pending charges post.I have two amex accounts - my personal and the work/corporate one.

5. It is doable since they allow other options to split it or plan it.Very Confusing! AmEx tries to cram way to much stuff into the App, which causes it to be overwhelming for the user.

6. I'm glad they were able to make it easier to use your reward dollars in the app, although it can take a really long time for the reward amount to update with your recent purchases.

7. The amount being paid isn't on the following screen, so there's no way to see that the wrong amount was selected, and no way to cancel a payment after it's gone through.

8. I get all the data I want about individual purchases (e.g., rewards amount per transaction).

9. Very disappointing!!The current balance is not included below each transaction, making it extremely difficult to track how much you've charged.

10. The "pay other amount" feature has broken UX.

11. I haven't had issues with any other card.

Steps to Troubleshoot & Fix Amex Issues

1. Fix Amex Not Working/Crashes/Errors/Unresponsive & Black/White screen:


  1. Restart Amex: Restarting the app will resolve most errors.
  2. Update the Amex App. Here is how:
    1. On Android goto PlayStore » Search for "Amex" » Open Amex » click "Update".
    2. On iPhone, goto AppStore » Your profile » Available Updates » Check for Amex » click "UPDATE".
  3. Clear Amex app cache: Clearing cached data will force your app to retrieve the latest data directly from Amex servers.
    1. On Android, goto Settings » Apps » Select "Amex" » click Storage » click "Clear Cache".
  4. Check Amex app permissions. If any of these permissions required to use your device's features are disenabled, Amex might not work.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall Amex. If nothing else has worked, completely uninstall Amex then reinstall.
  6. Restart your device. Last, restarting your device can often clear most problems causing Amex not working


2. Fix Amex Server issues & Internet Connection


  1. Check network connection: An unstable Internet will make Amex be unable to connect to it's servers. Ensure your wi-fi is working then restart app.
  2. Disable VPN: VPN can cause connection errors and lead to Amex not working. Make sure all VPNs are off
  3. Enable background data: When Background data is turned off, Amex may not be able to connect to the Internet when running in the background.
