COVIDWISE Customer Insights

1. What??? Covidwise says that "No personal data or location tracking occurs within this app." I've since learned that while the app itself doesn't ask for location, Google's Exposure Notification framework (used by the app) obtains location data by using Bluetooth.

2. However when I turned off my phone's location, I received a notification from Google's Exposure Notifications framework that I needed to enable location in order for the app to work.

3. I was happy to see a COVID tracing app that doesn't take advantage of this unfortunate circumstance to collect and sell user data.Unable to enable exposure notifications.

4. Edit: The inability to enable exposure notifications is due to a limitation on my phone's software version.

5. I love the idea, would love to get full feature capabilities, but whenever I try to set up the app with exposure notifications, I'm getting an internal error message.

6. Her friend has the app and submitted a positive result and my daughter did not get an alert.I've been running this since last July? August? Seemingly it's worked fine -- no notifications, but I'm rarely out of the house.

7. It kind of kills the purpose of the app if one has to reinstall it frequently, losing all exposure history...I really like the idea of this app, and hopefully the fact that I've never heard from it is a good thing.

8. App stopped checking the server about a week ago; had to reinstall to get it to start up again... Edit: Covidwise continues to stop checking exposures, despite following VDH's recommendations and protecting the app from power-related backgrounding.

9. Otherwise it looks like the app is trying to do something sneaky (trying to gather and store my location data without telling me).Terrible app.

10. However it still doesn't update, does not allow me to put any data into it and the bot for responding to information seems rather useless as well.

11. With the extra functionality provided by Google, I'm glad they did not take the route of forcing Bluetooth to be on and instead just providing you a notification.

Steps to Troubleshoot & Fix COVIDWISE Issues

1. Fix COVIDWISE Not Working/Crashes/Errors/Unresponsive & Black/White screen:


  1. Restart COVIDWISE: Restarting the app will resolve most errors.
  2. Update the COVIDWISE App. Here is how:
    1. On Android goto PlayStore » Search for "COVIDWISE" » Open COVIDWISE » click "Update".
    2. On iPhone, goto AppStore » Your profile » Available Updates » Check for COVIDWISE » click "UPDATE".
  3. Clear COVIDWISE app cache: Clearing cached data will force your app to retrieve the latest data directly from COVIDWISE servers.
    1. On Android, goto Settings » Apps » Select "COVIDWISE" » click Storage » click "Clear Cache".
  4. Check COVIDWISE app permissions. If any of these permissions required to use your device's features are disenabled, COVIDWISE might not work.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall COVIDWISE. If nothing else has worked, completely uninstall COVIDWISE then reinstall.
  6. Restart your device. Last, restarting your device can often clear most problems causing COVIDWISE not working


2. Fix COVIDWISE Server issues & Internet Connection


  1. Check network connection: An unstable Internet will make COVIDWISE be unable to connect to it's servers. Ensure your wi-fi is working then restart app.
  2. Disable VPN: VPN can cause connection errors and lead to COVIDWISE not working. Make sure all VPNs are off
  3. Enable background data: When Background data is turned off, COVIDWISE may not be able to connect to the Internet when running in the background.
