1. A refresh function would be helpful - when I download an issue of the magazine for offline reading, pictures are not being downloaded and missing in the offline version (this is a bug that has come in some months ago - it one worked fine.Was broken, now fixed.

2. complaints about this version include having to have the content page portrait, although the actual articles can be read landscape, and that it doesn't seem to remember where I last left off.

3. And where are my downloaded editions saved?- startup is really slow, it takes a good while until the magazine list is shown (maybe all the issue covers are high-res pics?) - latest issue usually only shows up when closing and9 reopening the app a couple of times.

4. And tapping "magazines" shows all of them, not just the ones you downloaded.If you are half way through reading an edition and want to be able to return to the same edition at the same point, you have to search that edition and try to remember where you got to.

5. Where's the downloaded area? Why can't it remember where I left off reading anymore? Whoever tested this rancid pile of code should be sacked.

6. Dark mode doesn't work, not because you can't turn it on, but because you can't read *black text on a black background*.

7. The addition of the audio aspect has been wonderful, which is why it's so darn frustrating that the app seems unable to unlock the audio for subscribers even when it says "active subscription found".

8. A step backwards as the old version did.If you exit the app it loses the place where you left off reading.

9. There are still some issues, but improving! A couple of current issues: the navigation bar at the top of the article overlaps with the too of the article itself on my Pixel 3, and the sensitivity of side Vs vertical scrolling is a bit off.

10. Even dark mode doesn't work anymore (black text on black background).

11. The moving banner of text at the bottom of every page from the audio option gives me motion sickness.

Steps to Troubleshoot & Fix New Scientist Issues

1. Fix New Scientist Not Working/Crashes/Errors/Unresponsive & Black/White screen:


  1. Restart New Scientist: Restarting the app will resolve most errors.
  2. Update the New Scientist App. Here is how:
    1. On Android goto PlayStore » Search for "New Scientist" » Open New Scientist » click "Update".
    2. On iPhone, goto AppStore » Your profile » Available Updates » Check for New Scientist » click "UPDATE".
  3. Clear New Scientist app cache: Clearing cached data will force your app to retrieve the latest data directly from New Scientist servers.
    1. On Android, goto Settings » Apps » Select "New Scientist" » click Storage » click "Clear Cache".
  4. Check New Scientist app permissions. If any of these permissions required to use your device's features are disenabled, New Scientist might not work.
  5. Uninstall and reinstall New Scientist. If nothing else has worked, completely uninstall New Scientist then reinstall.
  6. Restart your device. Last, restarting your device can often clear most problems causing New Scientist not working


2. Fix New Scientist Server issues & Internet Connection


  1. Check network connection: An unstable Internet will make New Scientist be unable to connect to it's servers. Ensure your wi-fi is working then restart app.
  2. Disable VPN: VPN can cause connection errors and lead to New Scientist not working. Make sure all VPNs are off
  3. Enable background data: When Background data is turned off, New Scientist may not be able to connect to the Internet when running in the background.
